The Smashing Pumpkins, opgericht 1988 in Chicago, IL , bracht in 1991 haar debuutalbum Gish uit en vond mainstream succes met de 4x multi-platina Siamese Dream uit 1993 en de 10x multi-platinum Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

Na de release van Adore, Machina / The Machines of God, en Machina II / The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music, ontbond de oorspronkelijke opstelling van de groep in 2000. 

Zanger / gitarist Billy Corgan hervormde de groep in 2005, en riep verschillende collegas op voor Zeitgeist, Teargarden van Kaleidyscope, Oceania, and Monuments to a Elegy. 

In juni 2018 brachten The Smashing Pumpkins hun nieuwe single "Solara" uit voor hun monumentale Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour. De track was het eerste nummer in meer dan 18 jaar met de originele leden Billy Corgan, James Iha en Jimmy Chamberlin, samen met oud-gitarist Jeff Schroeder en bood de eerste glimp van muziek uit de onlangs hervormde line-up.
